Our heritage bred pigs are mainly Berkshire crossed with Yorkshire and Old Spot. The Berkshire breed is prized for high-quality, tender, well-marbled gourmet meat. The Yorkshire are highly muscular, with large litters, high milk production, and maternal instincts. The Spots are versatile, fast-growing pigs known for good feed efficiency especially while foraging. These breeds create an excellent cross that is well suited to our farm and environment.
From our forest pastures to your freezer! Our heritage pork is available by side several times each year. At Whispering Root Farm, we believe happy animals produce the highest quality food. They spend their days roaming freely through rotating forest pens, enjoying fresh air, non-GMO feed, and plenty of belly rubs.
Our pigs have their main pen and shelter that they utilize during the night, however, they spend their days in over 2.5 acres of silvopasture (forested pasture) that supports our rotational grazing practice. The pigs love the forest since it enables them to root, which is an instinctual behavior driven by curiosity where pigs use their strong snouts to dig, forage, exercise, regulate their body temperature, and explore.
Their diet includes non-GMO grains, vegetation from foraging, with some produce and other tasty snacks. Absolutely no growth hormones or antibiotics used.
